Combat the Food Desert

We are thankful for a great partner: Equal Heart!

This organization shares our desire to go behind every door. Equal Heart allows us to provide a meal to every child in our program, 5 days per week, and 2 meals per day throughout the summer. They also recognize that if a child is hungry, there is probably a hungry family back home.

Recently, Equal Heart brought the grocery store to Village Oaks. Most families take public transportation to the grocery store. It takes about 35 minutes each way. Imagine doing that with 2 or 3 kids running around and bags of groceries on your arms. It doesn't work very well. For others, they might pay a friend $5-$10 for a ride, but that adds up. So, what do you do? You buy from food vendors who sell out of their trucks at incredible marked up prices.

Equal Heart is aiming to undercut those food vendors and prevent them from taking advantage of our community.

Recently, we were able to serve 75 families, which is when Equal Heart ran out of food. Next time, we are planning for 150 families.

We are so thankful for this partnership! To see people taken advantage of because of poverty is awful. Equal Heart is helping us do something about it where food is concerned.
